The implementation area of the houses is situated in the south part of Timişoara in an condensed residential neighborhood, with a majority of P+1..2 buildings, where there are a few plots left that are to be erected in the coming years. The theme of the project proposed the definition of a duplex housing with three or four bedrooms which should not exceed a budget of 500-550 euro/sqm and should have a certain flexibility in the second stage of the building process when new clients/buyers will appear. The two proposed plots had 400 sqm each. The houses keep the existing alignment and have a height level of P+1 to the street which decreases towards the backyard. On one hand, the two “siamese” have an urban air towards the public space, but on the other hand they have a more domestic scale towards the backyard. Last but not least, we consider that the east-west orientation of the houses had an judicial interpretation, with the bedrooms to the east and the living quarters and the kitchen to the west. The investor requested to define a different identity for the two houses. This demand was resolved through the different approach of the façade, orientation and natural illumination of the interior spaces, the apparent separation of the volumes of the two buildings and the flexible configuration of the upper floor in three different plan variations. The house plans are mirrored, the separated volumes assemble into a whole in which the difference and resemblance are carefully balanced. To the street, the houses develop on two levels which include the bedroom and the office. Through the detachment of the volume of the two houses in these zones leaves the impression of two separate buildings. The half towards the courtyard is a tall space which includes the living and dining area and the semi-open kitchen shares the height with an storage space at the upper floor. Because of the limitations imposed by the budget, for the project efficency, the circulation spaces were shrinked through a well-thought disposing and dimensioning of functions, while trying to impose a unique character through the way in which the natural illumination is realized. A simple construction system was chosen with brick structure, concrete floors and roof with wood beams. Meanwhile the houses were sold. Therefore, in the private area, the new owners were able to develop their own personalities, while the front of the house kept a certain unity.
